OFGS N5 - Fly Complex

GREEN FLY (Phaenicia sericata)
Adult; A beautiful, moderate sized fly (5-10mm) with bright emerald, blueish green, or coppery metallic body; without markings but numerous black spines: eyes brick red. Extremely common near and inside homes, especially during summer.
Larva: Slender white maggot, tinged with pinkish or purple; (up to 16mm) posterior breathing pores pear shaped with 3 straight, converging slits, in pit surrounded by 10 tubercles. The most common species in household garbage and urban carrion.

BLACK FLY (Ophyra)
are also associated with garbage. They are common around refuse dumps in the manure of garbage-fed hogs but are not usually found near homes. They are distinguished from Phaenicia by smaller size (5mm), shiny black colour, and white area in the center of the face. The larvae are thick-skinned and have spiny protuberances ventrally. They prey on other insect larvae.

LIFE CYCLE
Consisting of an egg stage, larva (maggot) and the adult. The flies primarily breed in manure piles and garbage.
